Checking daily poultry rates in Pakistan can sometimes be confusing because different figures are quoted depending on the point in the supply chain. Whether you are a poultry farmer, wholesaler, butcher, or everyday household consumer, understanding how prices are formed helps make smarter buying decisions.
1. Farm Gate or Mandi Rate
The farm gate price is the net price a poultry farmer receives when live broiler birds leave the farm. This price is determined every morning through open auction ('Boli') at wholesale fruit and poultry mandis or via Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) and district administration announcements. It excludes transport, bird shrinkage, mortality loss, and retail markup.
2. Broiler Live Wholesale Rate
Wholesalers purchase live birds in bulk and transport them in specialized cages to city distribution points and retail meat shops. The wholesale rate includes freight costs, inter-district toll fees, mortality risk, and wholesale dealer margins (typically Rs. 10 to Rs. 25 per kg above farm gate).
3. Retail Live Chicken Rate
When consumers visit their neighborhood poultry vendor to buy live birds weighed before dressing, they pay the retail live rate. This includes shop rental expenses, electricity, and local vendor profit.
4. Chicken Meat Retail Rate
Live broiler birds lose approximately 30% to 35% of total live weight during the dressing, deskinning, cleaning, and evisceration process. Consequently, dressed broiler meat is priced higher per kilogram to compensate for the dressing loss. As a general rule of thumb, meat retail price is roughly 1.40x to 1.45x the live retail bird rate.
